FAQ's
Below are some of the most frequently asked questions. If you find that a particular question is not answered below, please contact us using the form provided in the contact section.
How much does it cost for tutoring?
Tutoring costs can be found on the Costs & Location page along with the tutoring locations.
How do I schedule a tutoring session?
Details on our programs can be found under their respective pages, but to schedule a tutoring session, please use the e-mail under the Contact Us page. Before a tutoring time can be booked, the teacher/student needs to select a program and, in conjunction with the tutor, design an appropriate lesson plan to ensure maximum learning by the student.
Who will be doing the tutoring?
At Mercury Tutoring Service, we ensure that the tutor is extraordinarily competent in the area being tutored. Only above-average students with a passion for teaching and helping are considered to be a tutor. The tutor your child will be assigned to will be a very capable teacher, and an adaptable learner who can work with your child to help them succeed.
Why do you recommend tutoring on weekends?
We primarily tutor on weekends due to tutor availability as well as the acknowledgement that the student being tutored often has homework, studying, or extracurricular activities to do on weeknights. We also realize that in some exceptional circumstances, students may need to be tutored on weeknights. Due to the fluctuating nature of weekly commitments, we cannot guarantee that a weeknight slot will be available, but we will do our best to accommodate our tutors to your schedule.
Why does it cost more for the new concepts program?
The reason that the fees are slightly higher for the new concepts program is because this program involves teaching students new subject matter that they have little to no exposure to. For our homework/schoolwork help program, the student has been taught the material, has been provided with homework by the school, and the tutor is just helping the student to gain understanding of the material, and to develop critical thinking skills.
Why do you tutor out of the Calgary Public Library?
We tutor out of the Calgary public Library because the environment is more conductive to learning. In the library, there is easy access to resources for students and tutors to use to help with the tutoring. In addition, due to the lack of distractions, students can learn better, and faster, than if the tutoring were to occur online or at the student's home.
How long is the commitment?
At Mercury Tutoring Service, we believe that students should not have to sign up for more than one tutoring session at a time. As such, we only require students to sign up for a single tutoring session. Obviously, students will receive greater help with their schoolwork if they are meeting regularly with the same tutor who can help monitor their progress, but we do not require a long-term commitment by the student. For our new concepts program, we realize that for some courses, the material can simply not be covered in a single hour, however, we still do not require a long-term commitment by the student, although multiple tutoring sessions will be beneficial for the student in order for them to learn the most.
